It's Math and Art together! In your home packages you will be making robots, Minecraft characters and your name on grid paper. Afterwards you can calculate the Area and Perimeter!

Week of April 14
This week we are learning about Area.
To find the area of the shape, count the unit squares. This shape is made of 12 unit squares. The area of the shape is 12 square units. If the units are cm then the area is 12 cm² The little 2 up by the cm means squared! Work on area in your math workbook. Page 10 they are all square units. Page 11 the units are different! Page 12 you can draw some interesting shapes! Page 13 the shapes are all different and there is a lot of counting! |
Week of April 6
Last class we worked with money. We learned all about their names, what they looked like and how to make different amounts. Some of us even spent money at the Grade 6/7 market. There were lots of interesting things to buy there!
Just before that we were working on perimeter. We were working with our friends to make a zoo for different animals. We were adding up the sides of the fence. Some animals need much more fencing then others!

This video is a review of perimeter. Remember that we measure in units. I liked it when we used the paper clips!
We measured millimeters (mm), centimeters (cm) and meters (m) Remember there are 100cm in 1 m.
For long distances, we measure with kilometers (km).
The video talks about others ways to measure. You will hear about inches, feet and miles. That's what they use in the United States. A lot of our measuring tools can do both types of measuring. Remember our rulers can do inches on the other side!
See if you have a ruler at home to do some measuring. If not, remember that we talked about other things we could use, like our finger, string, or even paper!
This week try to find the perimeter of some different things around your house.

Next we have to figure out something called the area. We would need to know the area to be able to plant grass or put in a floor in for our zoo animals. At our next zoom meeting I'll show you how to do it!
